After regaining the title of UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski was very close to deciding to end his career. He celebrated in a grueling match against Diego Lopes at the UFC 314 event, ending an embarrassing streak of two heavy knockout losses.

The experienced fighter won by unanimous decision of the judges in a fight that lasted all five rounds. That victory not only brought him the belt, but also psychological relief. However, despite returning to the throne, he faced unexpected pressure, this time from those who know him best - members of his family.

"Right after the fight, my whole family was like, 'Why didn't you just leave the gloves in the middle of the Octagon right after the fight?' They all wanted me to retire," he told the MightyCast podcast in a candid interview.

"Everyone wanted it, but now that I've made the decision to continue, I probably won't even mention it anymore, simply because they don't want it to affect my mental state. I'll be fine, they can say whatever they want, and maybe they're just trying to be considerate. But they made it clear that everyone wanted me to retire right after the fight."

Motivation above all

The impressive Australian hasn't hidden what truly drives him forward in his career. While others talk about fame and legacy, his motive, he says, is much more down-to-earth and family-oriented.

"Honestly, no one likes to talk about this... but I've always fought for money, to provide for my family. If I have to take blows to the head for that, so be it, and I'll try not to take them! It was never about any legacy. Yes, the legacy I leave behind will help me build an empire for my family. And that's all that matters to me, and the legacy will come by itself."

At a time when many are considering retirement, this 35-year-old fighter is choosing to continue. Despite age and injuries, his will and motivation seem stronger than ever.
