In December, the company A22 Sports Management presented a new Superleague concept called Unify League. This competition includes 96 clubs divided into three divisions, and the most support for its implementation came from the big European clubs, among which Barcelona and Real Madrid stand out.
The competition has already received the green light from European courts, while permission has been requested from UEFA and FIFA. One of the first clubs to publicly express interest in participating is Marseille, a French club with a rich history and the only champion of the Old Continent from France. This decision followed Marseille's heavy defeat against Auxerre, which caused a scandal due to poor refereeing.
The scandal and the threat of leaving the league
In that match, after his player, Derek Cornelius, earned a second yellow card, Marseille president Pablo Longoria lost his temper. In the tunnel, he attacked the officiating, calling the French league a "s***" and threatening to leave Ligue 1.
Longoria said that if Marseille received a call-up from Superliga, he would immediately agree to a move. This incident only worsened the situation for Marseille, who are now 10 points behind PSG, effectively ending the title race.
Structured divisions in the Unify League
The Unify League would consist of 96 teams spread over four divisions. The first two divisions, Golden and Star, would each have 16 clubs divided into two groups. The four first-placed teams from each group would play in the knockout stage. The third and fourth divisions would be divided into four groups with eight teams each. Through this league, the best clubs from each national championship would get a chance to compete.
The entire league phase would last from September to April, and it remains to be seen whether this idea will come to fruition.
These are still just ideas, and we'll see if this becomes a reality. Many teams might follow the same path.
