When the news arrived in early February that Luka Dončić was joining the Los Angeles Lakers, the basketball world paused for a moment. It is an understatement to say that the transfer surprised the public; it was a real earthquake in the NBA league.
The debut of the Slovenian in the jersey of the famous franchise took place on February 10, and by the end of the regular season he recorded great numbers: an average of 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. However, despite his impressive statistics, the Lakers finished third in the West, but were quickly shocked by Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs; the series ended 4:1.
Fans had much higher expectations, but it is clear that this team has to change a lot of things if they want to be competitive with the strongest teams in the league next year.
Magic Johnson shares his views
The Lakers' legendary playmaker and one of the greatest faces in NBA history, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, spoke about what he expects from the 25-year-old in the next season. Although laudatory, he was also critical:
"Luka, all that was great when he was in Dallas. But Los Angeles is a different story. We play for titles here. Our best players are not valued by numbers, but by rings," said Johnson.
He added that the Slovenian is expected to repeat what LeBron has already done - bring the trophy. Also, he didn't spare words about the new coach:
"We have to play faster. We play too slow, and without defense there is no championship ring. That has to change urgently," he said, alluding to coach JJ Reddick.
LeBron stays
However, one dilemma has been resolved - the "King" remains. According to the well-informed Shams Charania, LeBron James will exercise his player option and stay with the Lakers for the 2025/2026 season. This means that the famous tandem will finally have the opportunity to start the season together and start hunting for the title.
Even though he is 41 years old, the experienced leader is still capable of contributing.
