Lando Norris admitted after qualifying for the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix that he made a few mistakes during his attempt, finishing sixth. Although he celebrated victory last week, Norris pointed out that this does not guarantee success in every race, not even in China. In a statement after qualifying, the young British driver did not blame the failure only on the car, but said that the mistakes while driving were more related to him than to the performance of the car.
His colleague, Oscar Piastri, was more critical about the car. The Australian complained about the car, but Norris remained optimistic, stressing that it is important to learn from each attempt and try to be better in the following races.
“I made a mistake. I locked the wheels in the last corner,” said Norris.
“But we’re just struggling a bit more now. We’re not fast enough, that’s all. We’ve got a lot of problems with the car.
It’s more about me than the car. I can’t make it perfect. This was just me pushing it over the limit.
I just have to back off a bit and not try too hard. I think the car is still good, in good shape – maybe not good enough for pole position, but we can certainly improve.”
Lando Norris and his views
The young driver continued, saying that too many mistakes ultimately resulted in that. Lando is not delighted with the latest events, aware that they must be conscientious if they want to finish at the top.
"The problems we're struggling with came to the fore even more today. Honestly, nothing more than that. Too many mistakes, the car is just too hard to drive," he added.
"We struggled all day with the front wheels locking up, especially in the last corner with the crosswind. It's actually very similar to Bahrain during pre-season testing – as soon as the wind gets stronger, we have a lot more problems.
I think both Oscar and I struggled more than usual, but obviously me more than him. So I was just pushing too hard to make up for the lack of speed."
