Jos Verstappen is pleased with the introduction of the new technical directive on the front wing which is being implemented in Barcelona this weekend.

Max Verstappen's father Jos Verstappen has backed the new front wing technical directive being introduced at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, calling it the "ideal scenario".

At the ninth race of the season in Barcelona, there will be a suppression of the use of flexible front wings, whereby the permitted movements will be significantly reduced.

The general expectation is that this could bring the teams closer together in terms of performance and potentially change the pecking order. McLaren has been repeatedly accused of using a flexible front wing; however, they passed all FIA checks. The team from Woking remained very calm about the upcoming changes.

Jos called for a fair relationship within the paddock and wants those who have benefited from the flexible front wing to lose that advantage.

"For the fans and for Formula 1, this is the ideal scenario," Jos Verstappen told De Telegraaf. "They want an exciting season, not someone winning 20 races so it becomes monotonous."

"But I think everyone should have the same conditions. Like with flexible front wings, which will only be banned in Spain next week. Some teams have benefited from it for too long. I don't think it's fair."

Strangers approach

Unlike previous years, Jos was away from the paddock for most of this season, but he returned to Monaco.

That meant he missed out on Verstappen's win at Imola, as well as his incredible first-turn overtaking on Oscar Piastri. Not surprisingly, many approached him about the move.

"Max makes a difference," added Jos. "At such an action, I jump in the air, and out of disbelief. I notice it in the reactions as well."

“I’ve had people come up to me and talk about it. Everyone thinks what he’s doing is incredible. But that’s Max. He’s already done that in karting.”

“You saw it at Imola, at the restart after the safety car. How sharp and fierce he is then, it’s amazing! You can see that passion there. And it’s still there, 100 percent.”

“I’m sure Red Bull are very lucky to have Max. I think they know that. He’s a really great guy, but don’t make him angry. Then he can get really annoying. As long as he feels that the team is doing their best. And right now I think he really does.”
