The New York Jets have announced the signing of veteran offensive lineman Connor McGovern to their offensive line to protect Aaron Rodgers. The announcement was made through social media, where it was indicated that McGovern would join their practice squad.
In a corresponding move, the Jets cut running back Xazavian Valladay from the roster. McGovern, who has mainly spent time with the Jets in the past four seasons, originally joined this team in 2020 after signing a three-year contract worth 27 million dollars package.
He then returned to the Jets in the previous offseason on a deal that covered one year and USD 1.9 Million. After becoming a free agent in March, McGovern has not signed with any other team, making this his fifth season in the green and white colored uniform.
Jets Strengthen Offensive Line Depth
This is a well-timed move for the Jets, who lost reserve lineman Wes Schweitzer to a hand injury just before the 2024 season began. Schweitzer was due to be the best interior backup for several positions: left guard, center, and right guard.
This individual was subsequently placed on the injured list. This designation makes him sit out a minimum of four games and, unfortunately, creates a huge void in the team's offensive line depth. At first scrutinizing, the Jets contemplated opting for internal candidates as a backup after Schweitzer.
However, it is good that McGovern’s availability restores much needed reassurance and quality over the offensive line. McGovern, 31, ended his eight seasons of NFL career with 102 match games and 91 matches started. The knowledge he brings will greatly assist, considering the Jets will still need to offer the best possible protection to Rodgers with Schweitzer out for some time.
By plugging in McGovern, the Jets now have a decisive old hand to ensure the offensive line comes together. McGovern will most certainly be needed to try to keep the quarterback from getting sacked in case the team has playoff ambitions.
The organization will look forward to McGovern’s availability to fill the gap and offer depth for the 2024 season.
