He's long been called out for his carefully chosen opponents, but 27-year-old Jake Paul is finally stepping into the ring against someone with real boxing pedigree. Namely, the "Problem Child" will cross the gloves with the former middleweight world champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., on Saturday, June 28. The match is already attracting a lot of attention, and the inclusion of the legendary Oscar De La Hoya gives it special significance.
The former champion, now a successful promoter, was a guest on DAZN's Ariel x Ade: The Boxing Show, where he shared his positive emotions for the upcoming fight. Although he previously avoided matches involving influencers, now he has completely changed his mind.
"The partnership with MVP has been amazing, great. The only reason I got involved is because Jake is now boxing against a real fighter, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a former world champion who went 12 rounds against Canelo (Alvarez). This is a real, legitimate fight. I'm looking forward to it. There are a lot of questions about Chavez Jr., will he be in top shape, will he make it to the scales, but at the end of the day, Jake Paul is fighting the world champion. That's a big step!"
De La Hoya: Jake has the potential to become a champion
De La Hoya went a step further, saying that he believes the YouTube star could one day actually become a world champion if he continues to improve.
"It takes time and experience, but everything is possible," added the experienced promoter.
Another surprise came when he gave his prediction – according to him, Jake would defeat Chavez via split decision.
"It will be an uncertain fight, full of twists and turns," concluded De La Hoya.
The fans are looking forward to this match with great expectations, but we will see if Jake Paul can once again show his dominance and silence the critics.
