The regular season started on September 5 for the Kansas City Chiefs, with their Super Bowl title defense, which, in many ways, was a level 1 game against Lamar Jackson's Baltimore Ravens. Besides this opportunity to witness a season opener, it was perhaps the first appearance of first-round NFL draft player Chiefs' wide Receiver Xavier Worthy.
To bolster their receiving unit, the Chiefs used the 28th selection of the 2024 NFL Draft to take Texas Longhorns speedster Xavier Worthy. Immediately, Worthy felt the need to actually do something on the field. In the first quarter, with 5:55 remaining on the game clock, the Chiefs were just 21 yards away from the end zone in Baltimore; Worthy made the whole stadium celebrate.
Receiving the ball on a reverse run, he ran 21 yards to score his first touchdown in the NFL. His performance left fans in astonishment, as many sought to see him in action, among them J.J. Watt, a former Houston Texans defensive end famous for his straightforward and explicit comments, tweeted regarding the new player's speed.
"Xavier Worthy fast as s---," Watts wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Good lord."
Worthy Record Speed
Worthy's game speed invited some comparison with the ex-Chief's favored deep threat, Tyrek Hill. At the 2023 NFL Combine, Worthy somewhat remarkably set a new record for the league's speed with an astonishing 4.21 seconds for the 40-yard dash.
Worthy was active for three seasons from 2021 to 2023 with the Texas Longhorns before formally joining the NFL. And it’s certainly safe to say that his college career was great. In total, he made 197 catches for 2755 yards and amassed 27 touchdowns, placing him among the nation's best receivers.
J.J. Watt has been named NFL Defensive Player of the Year three times and selected to the Pro Bowl first team five times. This indicates just how much rookie Worthy could influence the Chiefs' offense this coming season if it, too, elicits such praise.
