In the last few seasons, Lando Norris had a series of intense clashes on the track with the current Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen. Although their duels were the focus of the title fight last year, the tension has continued this season – the most recent incident occurred last weekend at the Miami Grand Prix.
Although he finished in second place, Norris commented on the situation after the race:
"If I don't go all or nothing, people complain. If I go, they complain again - you just can't win."
However, former Haas F1 team boss Guenther Steiner advised Norris not to worry about the opinions of the public and fans.a
"Focus on yourself, on what you want to do, not on what other people say," Steiner said on the Red Flag podcast.
"Don't listen to all that. Just try to do your best."
Brundle and Steiner advise a change of approach
Analyst and former Formula 1 driver, Martin Brundle, pointed out that Verstappen has a different driving style against Norris compared to his teammate, Oscar Piastri. Steiner added that a change of approach in Norris' driving could lead to an incident - but that it would not necessarily be negative.
"At some point you're going to run into Max," Steiner said.
"But have the confidence to go all the way. Don't let things that are out of your control shape you all the time."
"Lando knows he's a great driver. But he often plays it safe, avoids moves that could have negative consequences. He should say: this is how I want to race. If there's a crash - so be it."
Finally, Steiner told Norris not to position himself as someone who has to make a drastic move to make an impression:
"Don't think in style: I have to kick it out to show my teeth. Don't do that. Drive the way you think is right. If you crash once or twice - that's part of racing."
