Former NBA basketball player Shawn Kemp has been charged with second-degree assault with a firearm, following an incident that occurred in early March 2023.
Kemp then shot two men in the parking lot of a mall in Tacoma, Washington.
The once-spectacular wing center defended himself by saying that the people he shot at had surrounded his car and were rummaging through it when he found them.
After he was detained, the police were told that he acted in self-defense.
Kemp was originally charged with first-degree assault with a firearm, according to the indictment.
However, the prosecutors then added the second count of the indictment – shooting from a moving car.
Second-degree assault usually carries a standard sentence of three to nine months, but the maximum sentence is up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Sentencing of Kemp, who pleaded guilty, is scheduled for August 22.
