Experienced Russian heavyweight Alexander Volkov is closely following the events at the very top of the UFC's heavyweight division, where there is growing talk of a possible clash between interim champion Tom Aspinall and former challenger Cyril Gane. Since Volkov has already had a chance to square off with both of them, his perspective provides a special insight into this situation.
A tough battle in sight
"I think it's a 50-50 fight," the veteran fighter told MMA Junkie. "Both are really good. Cyril Gane is impressive in his movement, footwork, and he is not so weak in the ground. He has seriously started working on grappling and techniques on the ground. It all depends on how the fight will go and how ready both of them will be."
Let's recall that last year, Volkov lost to Aspinall at UFC Fight Night 204, where the match ended with a choke in the first round – which is a rarity against a fighter of his class. After that defeat, the experienced Russian heavyweight quickly returned to winning ways with four consecutive victories, only to suffer another heavy blow in late 2024, losing by split decision to Gane in a highly contested decision at UFC 310.
“From a technical point of view, when I fought both of them, Aspinall looked better to me,” Volkov continued. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean much in the actual fight. Gane will certainly be very motivated because it’s a championship title at stake. It all depends on the preparation and how the fight opens.”
Given the form and experience he possesses, the Russian heavyweight is one of the most interesting players in this category. His analysis further raises expectations for a possible duel between Aspinall and Gane, two of the most mobile fighters in the heavyweight division at the moment. One thing is for sure – regardless of the outcome, Volkov will be watching closely and waiting for his new opportunity. When he gets his chance, he will be a serious obstacle for any UFC heavyweight, especially in a time that is seen as a potential renaissance for this exciting division.
