Dustin Poirier is ready to close a big chapter in his career. And where would it be better than at home? UFC 318, scheduled for July 19 in New Orleans, will be the stage for the farewell of a fighter who has entered the cage for years with incredible heart and determination.
This 35-year-old has been talking about the end of his career for a long time, but now he has officially made the decision. Opponent? No less than old acquaintance Max Holloway. Both know what to expect from each other, as they have already shared the Octagon twice.
The first PPV event in New Orleans after a whole decade was organized precisely because of Dustin, and this was confirmed by the main man of the UFC.
– "Honestly, this whole event is because of Dustin. He wanted it. He wanted the last fight and the end of his career here, in New Orleans. And here we are," Dana White told WDSU.
Louisiana 2015
Many have forgotten that he last performed in his native Louisiana back in 2015, when he knocked out Yancy Medeiros. While the real title eluded him, the name of this fighter will remain inscribed in golden letters. It's not easy to be in the top for 15 years, and that's exactly what he managed to do.
- "He is currently fifth in the world in the lightweight category. He has been at the top of the world rankings for years. He has achieved a lot. He is one of the greatest of all time. Thousands of fighters have passed through the UFC, I don't know exactly where I would rank him, but he certainly belongs among the legends" - said White.
The third match against Holloway carries both emotion and history. Poirier celebrated both times; in 2012 by choke, and in 2019 by unanimous decision. This time everything is different. Holloway comes in as the "BMF" champion, and the local fighter wants his dream ending; a win, a farewell, and to leave the cage with his head held high.
– "Poirier is fighting Holloway, another one of the greats. It will be a spectacular fight" – added Dana White shortly.
