The world of motorsport was shaken by the tragic news of the death of 20-year-old Borja Gomez, a promising Spanish motorcyclist who lost his life during free training on the Magny-Cours track in France. The accident happened during the preparations for the third round of the European Championship in the Stock 1000 class, where Gomez was competing for the Honda Laglissa team and was first overall.
According to information from the scene, while exiting a turn, Gomez lost control of the motorcycle and fell. Unfortunately, he was bumped into by another competitor who failed to avoid the collision. Although the medical team responded quickly, the young driver died at the scene of the accident due to the severity of his injuries. His team and the entire motorcycling community expressed their deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans, emphasizing how much Borja was appreciated not only for his sporting talent, but also for his cheerfulness and personality.
Borja Gomez; career ended too early
Gomez was considered one of the most promising young riders not only in Spain, but also throughout Europe. He took his first steps in 2014 in the Spanish minimotard. In 2021, he won the Spanish Supersport championship, and a year later he was runner-up in his country's Superbike 1000 championship. Making his debut in the Moto2 World Championship in 2022, he managed to score his first points by finishing 12th in Valencia.
In 2023, he rode for Fantic Racing in the Moto2 category, and this year, in addition to leading the European Stock 1000 Championship with victories at the Estoril and Jerez tracks, he also held the top spot in the Spanish Superbike Championship. He recently achieved his fourth victory of the season at the MotorLand Aragon track, which confirmed his status as an exceptional talent.
Borja is known for his exceptional fighting spirit and resilience. After a serious accident at Misano in 2024, he managed to return and continue his career, showing a strong character. He also earned the role of test rider for the HRC World Superbike team, which was confirmation that he had a great future ahead of him.
His team, Honda Laglisse, said goodbye to him with an emotional message:
"More than his superb talent, we will remember Borja as the wonderful person he was. His warmth and smile will remain with us forever. We will always carry him in our hearts."
