This year we witness the dominance of 26-year-old Jannik Sinner and 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz aras in the tennis arenas, but both received a warning from the experienced Tennis Wolf, Toni Nadal; uncle of the famous Rafael Nadal.
Toni, who was the head coach of the tennis star from Majorca until 2017, recently made a statement to Gazeta dello Sport, just a week before the start of Wimbledon. He emphasized that Wimbledon is a tournament where surprises can always happen.
The young Spaniard is in fantastic form, with as many as 18 victories in a row and has won five titles since the beginning of the year. If he triumphs again in London, it would be his third consecutive title at this prestigious tournament, and his second great success of the year; after he already won Roland Garros.
"It is normal to expect a final between Sinner and Alcaraz, but we are talking about a specific Grand Slam, there are always surprises," said Toni Nadal and continued:
"If, say, Ben Shelton or any other top hitter has his day, big heads can easily fall. Grass is a dangerous surface where a match can go in an unpredictable direction very quickly."
Shelton
Shelton, whom he mentioned, reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year and is now expected to be the tenth seed. It is possible that he will play against Siner or Alcaraz in the round of 16, which further complicates the draw on Friday.
Toni was also asked if Sinner's loss to Alcaras at Roland Garros affected his game on grass in Hale:
"I don't believe that. This was something completely different, a different surface, a different opponent. Maybe Janik lacks a little more stability after the break he had, but we must not forget that he played in two finals - in Rome and Roland Garros. The defeat on grass will not undermine him as far as Wimbledon and the continuation of the season are concerned. Siner will certainly start again from London," concluded Toni.
Wimbledon is on the program from June 30 to July 13, and the defending champion in men's singles is Karlos Alkaras, who recently won the Queens tournament.
