Sean O’Malley will soon get another chance to claim the UFC bantamweight title. His previous attempt ended in a loss to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 last fall, despite being a slight favorite. After that setback, he decided to take a break to thoroughly prepare for a potential rematch against the currently unstoppable Georgian.
O’Malley acted quite sporty after the fight and promised to get the belt back, even though he didn’t know at the time that he would get a rematch against Merab. Sean has indeed changed this time, but the changes weren’t just related to training. Sean has withdrawn from social media in recent months, where he was very active, especially on TikTok.
O’Malley admitted that he has significantly adjusted his lifestyle ahead of the upcoming fight. He has eliminated the bad habits that were holding him back, and he spoke about this on the “TimboSugarShow” podcast.
"A lot of things in my life have changed, and I think that will affect my performance. For example, I don't use social media at all anymore, and I feel like it has transformed my life. It's only been three months, but I can already see a huge improvement," stated O'Malley.
In addition, he added that he gave up other habits that, he says, were bothering him. "Since the beginning of the year, I haven't used social media, but I haven't masturbated either. Also, I stopped using marijuana, although I didn't plan to. I just realized at one point that I didn't like how I felt afterward. I don't overeat anymore, my sleep is better, and I don't need the things I used to do," revealed the former champion.
These are radical changes for O'Malley, and the question is whether they will give him an edge in the ring. We are all used to him being a showman, and many compared him to McGregor, claiming that he drew inspiration from him.
The former champion has not competed since his defeat at UFC 306, and now he will have a chance to return to the throne. The rematch between him and Merab will be the main event of the next UFC, and Sean has had a year to prepare.
Unlike him, Merab Dvashvili did not rest. Umar Nurmagomedov called him out for a long time to accept a match against him, and although many doubted the Georgian, he still won by decision. In a spectacular five-round match, Dvashvili celebrated but also proved that it is possible to defeat fighters from the famous Dagestan school.
Although Umar justified himself by saying that he was competing with a broken hand, it was obvious that Dvashvili is a better fighter and that he deserved to win.
