At the famous Boston club, it seems the days of the old way of doing things are over. The team from Foxborough is going through big changes, all under the baton of new coach Mike Vrabel, who now has more responsibility because he also acts as the main man in the office. His decisions are not always popular, but they are clear - he wants to turn a struggling team into a serious contender for the playoffs.
Some of the long-time team members have already left. Experienced center David Andrews and defender Jonathan Jones left the club, and Davon Godchaux and Ja'Whaun Bentley are no longer part of the roster. In all this, one player is still "safe" – 27-year-old Rhamondre Stevenson.
This runner was selected in the fourth round back in 2021, and recently signed a contract extension. However, not everyone is enthusiastic about it. Gary Davenport, a reporter for Bleacher Report, published an article titled "the most overpaid nfl player at every position", where he states:
- "It's not easy to make big money as a running back in today's NFL. Only seven of them have an average annual salary of 10 million or more, and all of them have multi-year results behind them. Stevenson is not making 10 million, but he signed a four-year extension worth 36 million last year."
The fight for survival
Davenport also points out that the great runner missed five games in 2023, had a lower average per carry, and had as many as seven fumbles.
- "He averaged just 3.9 yards per carry, and had seven fumbles - the most of any NFL running back... The Patriots benched him occasionally last season, and now they have drafted TreVeyon Henderson in the second round."
Although he had 801 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, his uncertainty with the ball remains an issue. Ohio State's new running back brings speed and youth, which gives him an advantage. According to reports, Henderson is also better on the block, which further reduces the chances of the experienced Stevenson remaining as the main option.
If the situation does not improve, Vrabel could decide to send him to another center. It is known that the new coach does not shy away from difficult moves. Barring a major turnaround, 2025 could be this player's last year in a Patriots jersey.
