Mesut Özil started his football career excelling in Werder Bremen, which attracted the attention of big European clubs. His talent did not go unnoticed, so he moved to Real Madrid in 2010, and the transfer amounted to almost 20 million euros. Although he played for the "Royal Club" for only three seasons, that was the period when his talent came to full expression, although his later moments at Arsenal were also significant.
Going to Arsenal and ending his career in Turkey
In 2013, he shocked all football fans by deciding to leave Madrid and move to England, where Arsenal paid almost 50 million euros for him. He spent more than seven years at Arsenal, becoming a key player in the midfield, and then moved to Basaksehir in Turkey, where he ended his career, retiring at the age of 34.
Although he has decided to end his playing career, Özil is still present in the football world, and he recently gave an interview to Turkish television TRT. During the interview, he focused on one of football's newest talents, Arda Güler, who is considered by many to be the heir to Özil's style of play.
"Well, they are right when they say that he is similar to me. I see a lot of myself in Arda. We have to protect talents like him in whatever way we know how," said the former midfielder. He also added: "He showed class and I hope he will get the chance he deserves at Real. He is the future of football and Real, it is only important that they direct him properly, and they will get a player who will dominate the midfield for years to come."
In the Real Madrid jersey, Özil made a total of 159 appearances, scored 27 goals and registered 81 assists, leaving an indelible mark on the club.
