Ukrainian boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko, 48, is getting closer to a return to professional boxing, which could bring amazing moments in the history of the sport.

Klitschko considers a return to the top

Klitschko has been thinking about a return for some time, and his fans have not missed that the former long-time heavyweight champion has seriously stirred up the boxing public. He last entered the ring in April 2017, when he came close to winning against Anthony Joshua at Wembley, but was eventually knocked out in the penultimate round. That moment marked his decision to retire, but the desire to return has never disappeared.

Klitschko recently spoke about the possibility of breaking the record of the legendary George Foreman, who in 1994 became the oldest heavyweight champion of the world, by defeating Michael Moorer for the WBA and IBF titles. According to boxing insiders, Oleksandr Usyk’s team would reportedly be willing to offer Klitschko a direct title fight.

“Look, I’ve always been ready, I’ve always trained and I’m still ready. There’s been a lot of talk about my comeback for a long time, and I’ve mentioned before that breaking Foreman’s record would be incredibly exciting,” Klitschko told The Ring Magazine.

However, he doesn’t think it would be the right time to fight his compatriot Usyk. “Can you imagine a fight between two Ukrainians? He’s not my blood brother, we don’t have the same parents, but he’s my compatriot. Our country is at war and that would send the wrong message,” he added.

Usyk has been unrivaled in the last decade, and his status on the global boxing scene was confirmed by his recent victory over Tyson Fury. When asked about a possible retirement, Usyk confirmed that he remains committed to his career, which only underscores how much Ukrainians value and follow boxing.

Although the possibilities of Klitschko's return to the ring are still uncertain, it is clear that a fight for history has never been closer.
