The world of football was hit by a terrible tragedy in which the famous Liverpool footballer Diego Jota and his brother Andre lost their lives. The manner in which they passed away horrified and left many in shock.
According to available information, the accident happened near the city of Zamora, in the west of Spain, shortly after midnight. The car the brothers were in collided while they were overtaking, and the cause of the accident is still being investigated in detail. As reported by the Spanish media, a tire exploded on Diego's car during overtaking, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
An ambulance soon arrived at the scene of the accident, but unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the medical staff, both died on the spot. At first, it was not possible to determine their identity, because the bodies were so mutilated that the only way of identification was the registration plate on the car.
DNA testing
Final confirmation of identity will now require DNA testing. This sad news was confirmed by the competent institutions on Thursday morning.
Diego Jota was known in that region not only as a top athlete, but also as a person engaged in various local projects. His popularity and respect for him was great among all who knew him.
It is interesting that the top midfielder recently, on June 22, married his longtime girlfriend Rute Cardoso. The couple had three children together, and their happiness was tragically cut short in an accident.
Since 2020, when he joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton for 44.7 million euros, he has played 182 games for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and adding 26 assists. During that period, he won a number of trophies, including the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, the FA Cup and the League Cup in the 2021/22 season. Just a month ago, he won the League of Nations with the Portuguese national team.
Diego spent his career playing for Atletico Madrid and Porto, and he started his football story in his native Gondomar.
This tragedy reminds us once again how fragile and unpredictable life is. A month ago he was celebrating his greatest successes, and now he has left in the saddest way possible.
