The UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev may have outgrappled Dustin Poirier in his last title defense but it came at a cost! The cost was major-minor injuries that still bother him. The good news is that Islam Makhachev is progressively recovering and he can foresee himself returning in either December or January for his next clash.

Islam Makhachev admits that his next opponent will most probably be Arman Tsarukyan. The lightweight division never fails to get interesting. Michael Chandler moved on from the McGregor fight – at least temporarily. He will be facing Charles Oliveira for a rematch and the winner of that fight could most probably fight the winner of Arman Tsarukyan vs Islam Makhachev.

Islam Makhachev says he'll be ready to fight by the end of the year/beginning of next year

"I have a small injury now, but I'm already finishing my treatment. I'll be ready around the end of the year, January, beginning of the year."

Islam Makhachev on his return

In a recent interview, Islam Makhachev spoke about his projected return.

“Most likely Tsarukyan [is next],” Makhachev said as quoted by mmafighting.com. “[He’s] the No. 1 contender now. I have a small injury now but I’m finishing up my treatment and I’ll be ready around the end of the year, beginning of [next] year, January”.

Dana White says there WILL NOT be an interim lightweight title fight, and they will wait for Islam Makhachev to recover

“When [Islam] is ready to go, we’ll go. We have plans, we’re looking at it right now on when he would fight…

I don’t know [if December 7 is likely].
