Drew McIntyre, a well-known name in the wrestling scene, revealed his best match ever during a conversation with Chris Van Vliet. 39 years old has had many matches throughout his career, but one stands out above the rest for him. He has no doubt that his standout match was against Gunther and Sheamus. McIntyre finds it difficult to surpass the success of that match, given the various factors and elements that came together.
McIntyre still recalls the match with nostalgia, remembering the atmosphere and excitement that surrounded WrestleMania. He considers it a great story, especially with Gunther, who was very similar to them in terms of talent and character. Putting such big names together in the ring was nothing short of spectacular, and McIntyre remains delighted by that memorable story.
“I’d say bell to bell, the fact that it was at WrestleMania that could be the best match, probably is the best match of my career. I mean, how can you top being at WrestleMania, having a match that people say is one of the greatest Mania matches of all time, but perhaps the greatest Triple Threat of all time, and also the history I have with Sheamus? For the past 20 years, in the ring and out the ring, everything we’ve gone through together, and then adding Gunther, was somebody who’s just very similar to us, such an incredible physical in-ring talent. Put us all together and it was amazing."- McIntyire said as quoted by Pwmania.
McIntyre remembered a moment from the match, less than 10 minutes in, when Sheamus had delivered around 40 strikes to his chest and face. The crowd went wild, chanting "This is awesome," and McIntyre was amazed, thinking they hadn’t even really started yet. He even joked about seeing double at that point, which added to the excitement.
This also highlights how dedicated and experienced the wrestler was, willing to give his all to meet the expectations of both fans and company executives at that time. Drew has always been a wrestler who prioritizes the fans, aiming to deliver what they had dreamed of, which was achieved in this match. Although McIntyre faced difficulties during the match, many aspects of the experience remained positive and memorable for him.
He also praised the story behind the match. Gunther disappeared for a while, allowing McIntyre and Sheamus to have the one-on-one encounter they had always wanted at WrestleMania. For about 10 minutes, they went back and forth with Claymores and Brogue Kicks, making it feel like a singles match. When Gunther finally reappeared and stole the win, it made the whole experience even better. McIntyre felt it was a perfect moment, giving him and Sheamus the singles match they should have had the previous year.
Sheamus and McIntyre dreamed of such a moment for a long time, and in the end, they realized the dream they had. Many aspects of this match make it different and more special than many others. McIntyre then left a big mark on the wrestling scene, just like his colleagues in the ring.
Drew McIntyre on CM Punk
McIntyre recently also spoke about an interesting figure in the wrestling world, CM Punk. Punk, who often makes headlines, attracts massive attention from everyone. Opinions about him vary; while some view him negatively, many see him as a great figure who knows how to capture the fans' and audience's attention.
McIntyre described Punk as a courageous and straightforward individual, and ultimately, one of the most stubborn people in the world. This is not just McIntyre's perspective; many prominent figures in the wrestling scene share a similar view.
“Let’s not go insane and say evenly paced. 6-foot-five, 280- pound monster here, cardio machine, sexy Scotsman. But when he says the biggest thing he’s got going for him’s his heart, it’s true, and it’s not necessarily his heart, he’s one of the most stubborn pieces of crap on planet earth.”- he said.
The 39-year-old Briton emphasizes that CM Punk is so stubborn that he rarely ever gives up on his beliefs, willing to go to great lengths to achieve them. McIntyre reflected on a moment when he felt the impact of a hit from CM Punk, highlighting just how much he felt that blow. He was even more surprised by Punk's persistence and the moment when he continued to deliver the kick. Drew is also impressed by Punk's resilience and cardio endurance.
He has had the opportunity to face big names, but CM Punk comes out as one of the best he has been in the ring with.
"Honestly, I’ve been in the ring with the best of the best in the past ten years. He still ranks right up there."- McIntyre said.
