Desmond Bane will play in the Orlando Magic jersey next season, while his current club from Memphis receives a valuable package for his departure. This trade caused a lot of attention among NBA fans and experts, because it is a big transfer.
According to information released by ESPN insider Shams Charania, the 26-year-old guard from Indiana is moving to Florida in exchange for Kentavius Caldwell-Poup, Cole Anthony and four unprotected first-round draft picks. What's more, Memphis will have the option to trade those first-round picks to Orlando in the future whenever they want, giving them additional flexibility.
Bane has spent his entire career in Tennessee so far and in five seasons in the NBA, he has shown that he is a great guard with a strong rebounding presence and solid playmaking skills. In this season, he averaged 19.2 points per game, along with 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists. He is also known for his high shooting percentages; 88 percent from the free throw line and 41 percent for three points, which makes him a very dangerous player.
Did Orlando pay too much?
However, judging by the reactions, it seems that the Magic gave perhaps too much for their new star. Cole Anthony, who is 25 years old, and the experienced Kentavijus Caldwell-Poup, who is 32 years old, are certainly quality players from the bench. The more experienced of them also has a respectable championship pedigree, as he won the title with the Lakers in 2020 and with the Nuggets in 2023.
The decision to trade up to four first-round picks seems like a big risk for Orlando. The team has practically given up on potentially valuable players that could come via the draft in the coming years. However, it is obvious that the management of the club wants quick and concrete success more than long-term planning.
Bane will form an interesting trio in Magic with Franco Wagner and Paolo Banker, which gives fans a certain amount of optimism. On the other hand, Memphis will keep Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson, and hope that a strengthened rotation and future picks can soften the blow of the departure of one of their best players.
Fans believe this could be a great job for both parties.
