The latest race at Watkins Glen generated a storm of reactions from fans, experts, and current NASCAR drivers alike. The event was anything but predictable, showcasing the kind of excitement that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
As always, Denny Hamlin was quick to weigh in on the race, focusing particularly on the intense duel between Shane van Gisbergen and Chris Buescher. Hamlin stressed that Buescher’s victory was a well-earned one, as he capitalized on a mistake made by his competitor to secure a long-awaited win.
Hamlin was impressed with Buescher's relentless performance throughout the race, highlighting how he never gave up despite the challenges. On the other hand, Hamlin admitted to being somewhat surprised by van Gisbergen’s performance, expecting more from him given his track record.
Hamlin provided his own insights into the situation, explaining why SVG might have made the mistake that finally cost him the race. According to Hamlin, the error was a result of a combination of factors, including pressure and perhaps a miscalculation under the high-stakes conditions.
“I’m as equally impressed with his last lap as I was befuddled of SVG’s,” Hamlin said, as quoted by On3.
“I thought, ‘You give SVG the lead on the last lap, he’s just not going to make a mistake. He’s disciplined enough that he’s not going to make a mistake.’ But this was caused by two things. One thing that’s not talked about enough is that the run that Buescher got through the esses to get close enough to threaten SVG."
Hamlin clarified that SVG had a solid lead coming out of the first corner, but he lost some of that advantage when he went a bit off-line through the esses. This allowed Chris Buescher, in the No. 17 car, to catch up. Hamlin wondered if SVG was too focused on watching his mirrors and managing the gap or if he simply made a mistake.
In those critical moments of a NASCAR race, experience and quick thinking are crucial, as a split second can determine the winner. Chris Buescher demonstrated impressive skill by carefully waiting for his opportunity and then seizing the moment to capitalize on SVG’s mistake. His ability to stay focused and make the most of the situation was key to his victory.
SVG has every right to feel disappointed after the race, but he hasn’t let that overshadow his respect for his opponent. Despite the frustration of losing, he put an accent on Buescher’s impressive performance and the way he managed to take advantage of the situation. In NASCAR, where every fraction of a second counts, it’s both the skill and the mindset of the drivers that make all the difference.
Denny talked about the turning point when SVG had to get through the bus stop quickly to stay ahead of Buescher. SVG wasn’t in direct danger until they reached the bus stop, where he made a crucial error by getting too close to the right-hand barrier. This slight contact threw him off line and caused him to miss his intended path.
The 31-year-old took advantage of SVG’s mistake, driving perfectly through the second half of the bus stop and eventually taking the win. Hamlin stated that people aren’t talking enough about how Buescher managed to close the gap through the esses, which put pressure on SVG and led to his mistake at the bus stop.
An important lesson for both drivers
In racing, every competition offers huge lessons for both the victor and the defeated. For the winner, these races present a critical lesson: never give up, even when success seems out of reach. The triumph of perseverance can be immense, demonstrating that continuing effort and determination can overcome even the biggest obstacles.
For the loser, these experiences serve as a potent reminder to minimize mistakes and refine their strategies. Even seasoned and skilled drivers can find it difficult to stay focused and fend off relentless competition. Racing, particularly in NASCAR, is unpredictable and fraught with challenges. Each race presents a new opportunity to learn and adapt.
Recently, we witnessed a perfect example of this unpredictability. The outcome of the race will definitely be a powerful motivator for the 31-year-old driver, fueling their drive to push even harder and prove that they are capable of much more than they have shown so far. This race has set the stage for them to present their true potential and continue their journey with new energy and commitment.
It will be interesting to see what these two great drivers can do in the future. It is hard to expect them to be equally impressive in the following races, but certainly this is a great moment for both, especially Buescher.
