Luka Dončić, the talented Slovenian basketball player, still does not stop filling the sports headlines, especially after the sudden trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. Reactions to his departure from Dallas were mixed, and many had something to say about the decision.
Luka Dončić and criticism of his approach
Some, like Patrick Dumont, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, even indirectly accused Dončić of not being dedicated and diligent enough, accusing him of a lack of focus. It may seem that way at first glance, just as Nikola Jokić is sometimes said to be disinterested, but the reality is much more complex.
Both of them showed that despite various epithets, they are still the best in this sport.
Both are key factors in the rise of their teams and improvement of the quality of the NBA league. Dončić showed amazing skills and became a real superstar, producing positive reactions and emotions among fans around the world.
In his last public address, Dumont wanted to explain the reasons behind the decision to trade the Slovenian basketball player to the Lakers, stressing that Anthony Davis was brought in to replace Dončić. "Teams win because all the players are focused, dedicated and have the right character," Dumont told the Dallas Morning News. "If that's not the case, defeat ensues."
Although Dumont is clearly frustrated with Dončić's approach, considering that he did not give his best, he could not avoid touching on other big names.
"Look at the best players in this league, like Jordan, Bird, Bryant or Shaq. They worked hard every day, with an exclusive focus on winning. If you don't have that in you, nothing will work," said the Mavericks owner.
However, Dumont soon changed his tone, highlighting Dončić in a positive light.
"I'm a big fan of Luka. My family is too. I really appreciate everything he's brought to this team and to Dallas. He's an incredible player," he said. "Luka will forever be a Maverick and I wish him nothing but happiness and success in his career."
