There has been silence in the UFC heavyweight division for some time. The great fighter known by the nickname "Razor" decided to speak out about the state of affairs that frustrates many. During the media day ahead of the UFC on ABC 8 event in Baku, the 33-year-old said without mincing words that things must move forward.
– Without changes at the top, where are we going? No. 5 can't progress if there is no progress. If Jones doesn't plan to fight, let him be stripped of his belt. It's clear to everyone that he is the greatest of all time, but what does a belt mean if you are not active? This has dragged on for too long – "Razor" pointed out.
Jon Jones' crown without fights
Jon Jones won the title back in March 2023. Then he celebrated against the legendary Stipe Miočić, a man who was already on the verge of retirement, and who had not entered the octagon for almost three years. From that moment on; complete silence. No fights, no title defenses, only occasional announcements and vague messages.
Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall took the interim belt, defeated Blaydes himself, and now awaits the outcome.
– He loves this. He loves to be talked about, but I'm done with it. For me, he's retired until he proves otherwise. Out of sight, out of mind – he was a clear fighter.
This weekend he faces a fight with Rizvan Kuniev. On paper, an easier opponent, but the fighter from the USA knows that there is no relaxation.
– I'm ready for a rematch with Derrick Lewis if he wins in July. Or with Sergey Pavlovich. I lost to both of them, but such fights make sense. Or give me Cyril Gane, I've been looking for him for a long time. There are a lot of options – he said.
His goal is clear – the title. And soon.
