Cole Custer's aggressive approach during the Daytona race caused a lot of reaction among important NASCAR figures, drivers and fans of the sport. The 27-year-old driver was involved in two accidents in the final stage, and after the race, he decided to apologize.

In an interview with FOX Sports, Custer referred to the accident that knocked out Denny Hamlin in the last lap.

Denny Hamlin did not remain silent, frustrated by this kind of approach of the young driver.

After the race, Cole Custer decided to explain how things looked from his perspective, believing that there were things that made him act like that on the last part of the race. Although he is aware that he made a mistake, Custer believed at that moment that he was doing the right thing.

“There were definitely things that made me want to take that run on the back stretch. Because I got such a big run from the 19 pushing me, and I was probably a couple car lengths back of Denny at the time. I just tried to take the run. It was the last lap. I tried to take it. I knew I probably should have waited for the front stretch, but it’s one of those things you learn from the next time.”- he said, as quoted by On3!

The famous driver then decided to explain that the approach of other drivers was a motivating factor for him to act in an identical manner. These types of races feel enormous pressure, expectations, and Cole wanted to take advantage of the momentum he found himself in. However, things were not ideal, nor as he imagined.

“Then also having the 35 spin out on the front stretch, it was kind of like, man, these guys are all wrecking, you’ve got to get to the lead now. You just didn’t feel like you had a second to waste.”-Cole Custer said.
