Borussia Dortmund have announced that they have sacked coach Nuri Sahin following last night's Champions League defeat to Bologna.

Last night, Borussia lost 2:1 in Italy in the penultimate round of the Champions League, and significantly reduced the chances of finishing the competition among the eight best teams that will advance directly to the round of 16.

The German club was far from the expected level, and even more frustration was awakened by the fact that Bologna is a team that is not so impressive this season in Italy, just like in the Champions League. The fans of Borussia Dortmund believed they could take an important step towards the top 16, but unfortunately, their dreams were shattered last night.

The club's sporting director, Lars Ricken, confirmed that they have ended cooperation with Sahin. Although they had a great relationship, Ricken hoped that the Turk could change the climate within the team and turn them in the right direction, last night's defeat was the last straw.

The season in the Bundesliga is also far from ideal, giving another reason why the management realized that this is the best thing for them.

"We were hoping for a long-term cooperation with Sahin because we value him a lot, we believed until the end that he could turn the situation around, but after four consecutive defeats and only one win in the last nine games, we lost faith in him being able to fulfill his goals for this season. We are only in tenth place in the Bundesliga, so with a heavy heart I have decided to terminate cooperation with Sahin," said the club's sports director Lars Ricken.

Nuri Sahin reacts

Nuri Sahin did not have many comments, aware that he did not fulfill what was expected.

"Unfortunately, I did not manage to fulfill Borussia's sporting goals for this season. I wish the club all the best in the future," Sahin said briefly.

It will be interesting to see who will succeed the former midfielder as coach of Borussia Dortmund.
