It is not easy for the young Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz. Not only did he lose the title at Wimbledon, which he won twice in a row, but he is now also facing criticism for his decision not to compete in the Masters tournament in Toronto.
The Spanish ace is not the only great tennis player who decided to skip the first masters in the summer American series, in preparation for the US Open. Among them are Jannik Sinner, who also withdrew, as well as Novak Djokovic and the British Jack Draper.
Advice from former number two and the need for rest
Many believe that the decision of the 20-year-old tennis player is related to the recommendations of Alex Koretza, the former world number two. After Wimbledon ended, Koretza told a Spanish television channel that he hoped Alcaraz would not travel to Toronto.
"I never interfere in the schedule and work of my colleague Juan Carlos Ferrer and the decisions he makes regarding Alcaraz, but I hope that he will not be in Toronto. I say this with all respect for the tournament in Canada. However, I think that Alcaraz needs recovery after all the efforts lately," said Koretza.
After all, Alcaraz himself decided to speak out and explain the reasons for his decision.
"After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, unfortunately I won't be able to play in Toronto this year. I have a little muscle problem and I need to recover physically and mentally for what's to come. I'm sorry for the tournament and my fans in Canada, see you next year," said the talented Spaniard.
Jannik Sinner also pointed out that his priority is to stay healthy, while Novak Djokovic had problems with a groin injury sustained during Wimbledon. Jack Draper announced that he will skip the Cincinnati Masters in order to be fully prepared for the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open in New York.
