While the most famous player of the Los Angeles Lakers prepares for another NBA season, the comments and criticism about him do not stop. The reason is the decision to use the option in the contract and earn 52.6 million dollars - which is completely legitimate, but obviously also controversial for part of the basketball public.
Former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy appeared on the show "Nothing Personal with David Sampson", where he spoke openly about the subject. An experienced expert believes that the problem is deeper than just salary and contract.
"LeBron has been criticized for a long time, for a variety of reasons. Whether it was his decision to move to Miami that he announced on television, or accidentally punching Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra," Van Gundy said.
"Hate exists even when you do everything right"
Van Gundy also touched on the behavior of the experienced superstar off the floor. He praised his stability and reputation, recalling that he had never been part of a serious scandal.
"The most incredible thing to me is that this guy has been a national figure since the eighth grade, and what is the biggest scandal you can find with him off the court? Nothing. He did everything right, he represents the NBA and basketball in the best way. And again, there is this hatred for him," he explained.
The coach especially emphasized how many negative reactions come precisely because of the eternal comparison with the famous Michael Jordan:
"A lot of people just adore Michael Jordan and when someone says, 'Maybe LeBron is as good or better,' it makes them hate LeBron instead of appreciating what he's accomplished. And that, in my opinion, is tragic."
Although he has entered his fifth decade of life, the 40-year-old still plays at an extremely high level. He finished last season with an average of 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game - which clearly shows that age is not slowing him down.
