Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has never hidden his ambitions and goals when it comes to the NFL. The 30-year-old has serious intentions for the future, with a clear desire to become the first receiver to hit 2,000 receiving yards in a season. Last year, he came close, leading the NFL with 1,799 yards. The season before that, he finished second. However, he still hasn’t reached his 2,000-yard goal.
In a recent interview, Hill reflected on his past statements, admitting that he might have been a bit too focused on personal achievements. Now, the wide receiver wants to shift his focus to team goals. He emphasized that making his team as successful as possible, including winning a playoff game and ultimately a Super Bowl, is more important to him than individual stats.
"That's very selfish of me," Hill said, as quoted by ESPN.
"So here moving forward, the individual goal I've been talking about this whole entire offseason with my teammates and with my family is, I would want us to, A: win a playoff game. I would love that. We're going to start with that. Then moving forward continuing to build on that, we're going to move to the Super Bowl."
Hill emphasizes that team goals are far more important than individual achievements. The Miami Dolphins are a team full of talented individuals, with the potential to accomplish great things together.
"If I'm able to help this team do something special as a team goal, I would definitely count that as an individual goal as my own. ... That'd be something that I could live with for the rest of my life."- Hill concluded.
The 2024 season has been tough for Tyreek Hill. In the first nine weeks, he has only recorded 441 yards on 34 receptions, which is a huge drop compared to previous years. This decline in performance is largely due to injuries and the absence of QB Tua Tagovailoa, who missed four games due to a concussion. Hill has admitted that it’s hard to accept the situation and the fact that things aren’t going his way.
The 30-year-old understands that the team needs to stick together, trust the process, and take a big step forward for the future. Hill is someone who knows how the NFL works and what it takes to achieve success. He remains focused on the bigger picture, staying determined to help the team get back on track.
"This process is hard, bro. Losing sucks. Everybody wants to think, 'oh, it's time to make plays, it's time to go outside the scheme.' Nah man, we just got to stick together as a team and just trust the process."- Hill said.
Hill explained that football, like life, has its highs and lows. After nine seasons in the league, he's learned to accept that it's part of the process. He said he's not going to stress over the tough times or let them get to him. Instead, he's focused on the things he can control; like running the right routes, being in the right position, and supporting his teammates.
Tyreek Hill didn’t have a great game against the Indianapolis Colts. With just eight yards on one catch, it marked his lowest yardage in a single game since the second game of his rookie season. It’s a stat Hill probably wasn’t happy with.
Mike McDaniel reacts to his team's performance
However, despite the criticism and reactions, head coach Mike McDaniel wasn’t about to call out his players. He praised Hill and Jaylen Waddle for their efforts, saying they were both fantastic and did everything they could to help the team win. McDaniel is known for not being overly critical of his players, and in this case, he focused on their positive contributions, even if they didn’t have many opportunities to make big plays.
"They were phenomenal all game," McDaniel said.
"They've really looked at their role in an expansive way. They've been trying to do whatever we can to win the football game. When you run the ball 40 times, it does minimize your opportunities and then if you're trying to take advantage of a defense over playing and doubling them and getting the ball to the tight end, then they have less (opportunities)."
It will be interesting to see what this team can do moving forward without one of their key players, especially when others haven't exactly been shining in every game. Mike McDaniel wants his team to stay focused on their goals, to keep believing in themselves, and he believes that the rewards will eventually come if they stay on track.
