In 2025, Yuki Tsunoda will take over as a reserve driver for the Red Bull team, while also being the main driver for the Racing Bulls. Although this is a significant moment in his career, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has made it clear that the club's priorities are currently focused on Max Verstappen and new driver Liam Lawton. As a reserve, Tsunoda will only have the opportunity to drive in the event of an accident or problems with the main drivers.
Interestingly, Tsunoda has moved into this role instead of Liam Lawson, who was previously a reserve driver but has now moved to the main team, replacing Sergio Perez. Lawson will have the opportunity to drive at full capacity, which is a big step for him, while Yuki will have to make do with a position outside the team's focus. Although Tsunoda finished ahead of Lawson in the final few races of 2024, Red Bull has decided to favor the New Zealander.
What can we expect?
This young driver, on the other hand, will now have to wait for his chance. In the past, the young drivers in the Red Bull team have not always coped under the pressure of Verstappen, who dominated the car. Many drivers could not stand this dynamic and quickly left the team, which puts additional pressure on Lawson. Horner points out that he is not worried about the possibility of Tsunoda taking Lawson's place, as the team is currently focusing on the development of its key drivers.
Although Yuki will not be at the forefront, Horner stated that he will closely monitor his development, just like other drivers such as Isack Hadjar. Although Tsunoda is talented, his chances of promotion are slim in the near future. For Lawson, Horner simply said his goal is to score as many points as possible during the season.
The year 2025 will be crucial for Red Bull and their drivers. Tsunoda will have to be patient, but at the same time use every moment to improve his skills. Although he is currently in the background, you never know when an opportunity will come, because in Formula 1 anything is possible.
