Another blow has hit Trey Lance’s troubled offseason. The Dallas Cowboys have announced that he will be the third-string quarterback in the upcoming season. This decision was made clear by the Cowboys' head coach, Mike McCarthy, who also made it known that Cooper Rush would take the backup role with Daw Prescott being the starter.
Making an address to the press on Monday, McCarthy clarified that Lance has improved over the preseason, especially since he was a first-round pick. "Cooper’s taken the No. 2 reps this week, but I felt very encouraged and really excited about Trey's growth throughout the process," McCarthy stated.
“I feel like I answer the question the same way every time. We just got to continue to develop him." McCarthy stressed Lance's progress in terms of different ideas due to his advancement of footwork. “You can see the things he’s focused on, the concept, footwork and things like that.
It got better each week throughout the preseason,” he said. Returning to the indoor game, the coach also added the possibility of extended plays by Lance’s legs, and the quarterback initiates the run phase, emphasizing the importance of working on his drop-back passing.
Lance Preseason Struggles
The Cowboys securedhis services in August of 2023. They gave the San Francisco 49ers a 2024 fourth-round draft pick as compensation. Although the prospects looked bright, Lance has not participated in the regular season for the last year, but quite a few chances have been given in this preseason to make a case for himself in the squad.
He was 73 for 113 in passing attempts, with production being 662 yards, of which two were touchdowns and five interceptable touchdowns over three preseason games. Dallas’ Lance started the game against the Substitute Los Angeles Chargers during the preseason match and had an up-and-down match.
Turning the ball over five times, Lance played a key role in ensuring that honoring running backs did stand a chance, leading the Cowboys with rushing yards despite a furious run attempt of 11 carries for 90 yards, including a 46-yard blowout touchdown run attempt.
Still, other than those highlights, there was a constant uphill. In May, the Cowboys refused to pick adequate counsel on the fifth-year Official Lance Mosley, and thus, the next five seasons, that is, 2025, will be a small matter in case the reserves come into play.
His rookie contract originally signed with the 49ers is in its fourth and final year, with a base salary of 5.31 million.
