Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers might have to be a little more patient before seeing Russell Wilson don the team’s colors. Wilson was ruled out of the team’s matchup on the season opener because of a calf strain, but he has been upgraded to questionable for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

However, as stated by Gerry Dulac of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Wilson is most likely not expected to return for at least Week 4 which means Justin Fields will probably retain the starting quarterback position for the next two games.

‘The Steelers intend to have Justin Fields under center and treat this as a two-game stand, on Sunday against the Broncos and at home on September 22 when the Chargers cross over so that Russell Wilson does not aggravate his calf injury while Justin Fields heads into that part of the season,’ Dulac said on Friday.

Wilson Contract Impact

Wilson, one of the many firepowers signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent, was signed on a one-year contract of $1.21 million, the veteran minimum. His signing was noteworthy not only in respect of the talent he possessed but also regarding the amount spent.

The Denver Broncos, who cut Wilson earlier this year, are still paying $39 million to him not to be part of them. Even with all that he has done, there is doubt whether he will take over the starting position once Wilson is back on his feet.

Justin Fields was instrumental in helping the Steelers secure a win in Week 1, but more is required from him. He threw for a little over one hundred fifty yards during the win, causing a quarterback controversy all over again.

When Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin suggested that a quarterback rush was possible, he refused to consider such assumptions. “I am not going to comfort you with reason aside propositions,” told Tomlin this week.

“ I have adopted this practice personally. So why begin today? Is it because it is a quarterback or a story that makes its way nationally? I find some of those stories hard to engage”. As the Steelers gear up for Week 2, the focus remains on managing Wilson’s injury and preparing Fields for his starting role.
