Negotiations between the PIF and the PGA Tour continue to be a key focus in the golf world. It is difficult to determine precisely how long the negotiations will last and whether both sides will eventually reach an agreement, but optimistic statements from PGA Tour officials and the players themselves inspire hope for a better future.
Tiger Woods and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan have said several times that there is great optimism about reaching an agreement.
However, some feel that these statements are just 'buying time' for both sides, and we still don't have an answer regarding the future of golf and the merger. Is that really the case?
Rory McIlroy and his thoughts on negotiations
Although Tiger Woods continues to be the main figure producing positive reactions, golf fans are particularly interested in what Rory McIlroy, arguably the PGA Tour's best-known and most important player, thinks about the negotiations. Although McIlroy is the leader on the Tour, before the start of the Arnold Palmer Invitational tournament, he said that he is not so optimistic, which caused concern among fans.
Rory believes that reaching an agreement is extremely difficult, especially if both parties are not open to negotiations.
“I think it takes two to tango,” McIlroy said, according to a report by SB Nation. “If one side is ready and the other is not, it’s very difficult to achieve.”
Rory's goals
McIlroy has surprised many again with his views, stressing that perhaps the PGA Tour doesn’t necessarily need this deal. McIlroy was initially very negative about LIV Golf, but has since changed his mind, highlighting that merging the two tours is the best option for everyone.
“The situation is a little different now than it was a few weeks ago,” McIlroy said. “I still think a deal would be the best solution for golf, but from the PGA Tour’s side, I think they might not necessarily need it.”
