Lando Norris was impressive once again, achieving victory in Singapore and closing the gap to Max Verstappen, although the difference between them is still huge. The most important thing for the Brit is that Verstappen's lead is shrinking, regardless of everything. In a media interview, Norris reflected on his third win of the season, which is crucial for the remainder of the championship. He highlighted that he had a great race, despite a few moments where he wasn't perfect, believing he controlled the race in the best possible way.
The 24-year-old from Bristol acknowledged that he had a car that enabled him to achieve such an impressive result. There were moments when things could have gone differently, but the Brit stayed focused and secured yet another well-deserved victory.
“It was an amazing race. A few too many close calls, a couple of little moments in the middle, but it was well controlled I think otherwise.
The car was mega. I could push, we were flying the whole race and at the end could just chill, so it was a nice race. Still tough, I’m a bit out of breath. A very fun one.”-Lando Norris said, as quoted by F1.
Reporters asked Norris if he sometimes feels he has to give more than his best, considering the advantage Red Bull has. The young driver emphasized that the key is not to push too hard but to find a balance between over-pushing and sometimes chilling too much. Lando is a unique driver in many ways and is also one of the favorites on the F1 scene.
It’s interesting to note that Lando wanted to build a larger lead in this race to demonstrate the dominance he felt he had.
“It’s not that you’re necessarily over-pushing, sometimes it can be that you’re just chilling too much. Maybe it was a bit of both, I don’t know what it is.
It’s tricky, it was still tough out there, easy to lock the tyres like I did. I didn’t want to have a one-second lead, I wanted to have the biggest lead possible."-Lando Norris said.
Lando enjoyed the race, expressing that it was a lot of fun to secure maximum points. He was also pleased to share the podium with Oscar Piastri, who drove really well, making it a great day for the team.
When asked if this race was the most physically demanding for him, he compared it to Qatar last year. He mentioned that he didn't hold back and could have made things easier for himself. He admitted to feeling a bit dizzy afterward, but overall, he was doing well.
The leaders of McLaren are happy that both their drivers showed superiority in this race, with the hope that they can do the same in the races that follow during the season. McLaren has two great drivers, and it is really difficult to say in which direction the careers of both will go.
Norris is more experienced, but Piastri also shows his potential. Many teams are already inquiring and interested in him.
Oscar Piastri reflected on the race, stressing that it was a strong comeback after a disappointing qualifying session. He was delighted to be back on the podium, feeling that they had a really fast car and a solid strategy that helped them overtake the Mercedes drivers. He expressed his gratitude to the team for their efforts. In the end, he emphasized that the car performed greatly this weekend, resulting in valuable points for the entire team.
Oscar Piastri on taking risks
The young Australian acknowledged that he decided not to take too many risks during the race, fully aware of the potential consequences. He recalled his duel with Russell at Turn 1, which made him much more cautious afterward, as he didn’t want to take unnecessary chances. Despite his youth, he has a solid understanding of F1 and knows the repercussions of an aggressive approach. In this race, he demonstrated that he has the potential to become a championship-caliber driver in the coming years.
"No, I kept it off them [the walls] this time, I don't think I hit anything," he said.
"It was a bit close with George [Russell] at Turn 1, but once I got into third, I had a massive hap to try and close up, so I didn't wanna take too many risks."
Given his performances over the past two weeks, the young driver knew he needed to be more cautious this time. The most important thing for him was finishing on the podium, and he now holds fourth place in the standings with 237 points.
