The Boston Bruins are known as a team that was active during every trade deadline, wanting to strengthen the team and make them one of the main candidates for the top. Boston currently sits atop the Atlantic Division, one point behind the Detroit Red Wings, who are in the playoff spot.
General manager Don Sweeney pointed out in a media interview that this year is a little different from the previous ones, admitting that they failed in many of the things they set out to do. However, they are ready to test, analyze the situation, and see in which aspect they can improve.
"It's been a little unique for us this year, getting out of the gate not as fast as we would like. We're in the middle of things," Sweeney said, as quoted by The Fresno Bee.
"It's a tough exercise to sort of play both sides of the street, but that's almost every year what a general manager is required to do-test what's out there, what's available, and how you can improve."
Three weeks ago, Bruins president Cam Neely stated that the team had not yet decided which direction to take ahead of the trade deadline. He explained that they were considering two possible approaches: one where they would be buyers, and another where they might make some adjustments to their roster. Neely emphasized that the Bruins still believed they had a playoff-caliber team but were cautious not to make moves that could harm their chances of making the playoffs, even if those moves could be beneficial in the long term.
What can we expect?
If this team continues with negative results, it is certain that they will give up some of the players like Justin Brazeau, Morgan Geekie, and maybe Brad Marchand, considering that there are upcoming free agents. This would probably cause various reactions, but this team wants to see the rise and better results.
