The former wide receiver of the San Francisco 49's, Deebo Samuel, is now a member of the Washington Commanders. This transfer caused a lot of attention because it is a significant reinforcement for the Commanders attack, which is currently preparing for the new season. The 49's received a fifth-round pick for him in the upcoming NFL draft, which further heightened preseason expectations.
The new NFL season begins on March 12, when all trades, including this one, will be officially confirmed. Although the American media speculated that defensive tackle Jonathan Allen could be part of the trade and that he could move in the opposite direction, that did not happen. Thus, Washington secured additional attacking power for his team.
Attack reinforcement
Samuel comes at a time when the Commanders attack was looking for reinforcements. Along with amazing quarterback Jaden Daniels, who did great things last season and helped the team reach the National Football Conference finals, Samuel could be a key figure in the offense. His athletic ability and versatility as a runner and catcher make him a great reinforcement for the team.
Samuel is entering the last year of his current contract, which is why he was traded. In the previous months, it was clear that there would be no agreement on the extension of cooperation with the 49's, so they decided to trade him in order to make some profit. Whether that will be a good move remains to be seen.
In six seasons in the NFL, Samuel racked up an impressive 4,792 yards catching and another 1,143 yards rushing. He achieved his greatest success in 2021, when he was selected in the ideal lineup and achieved 1,770 yards. Then he signed a three-year contract worth 71.5 million dollars, which speaks volumes about his value on the field.
This trade allows the Commanders to improve their catching corps, which struggled last season. Together with the reliable Terry McLaurin, Samuel will certainly be an additional threat to the defense of opposing teams. It is expected that the Commanders will also try to get another quality player for the attack in the draft.
