Dallas Mavericks and 33-year-old Kyrie Irving recently reached an agreement on a three-year contract worth $119 million. This is a significant move, especially since the All-Star running back is still recovering from a major injury; a torn ACL in his knee.

It is expected that the experienced player will be ready to return to the field by January next year. He previously declined a $43 million player option for the final year of his previous contract, an unnamed source confirmed to The Associated Press. It is reported that the new contract is not expected to be officially confirmed before the start of the new NBA season, which starts on July 6.

The new contract aligns Kyrie's status with that of Anthony Davis, who also signed for the Mavericks in a major trade in February, when Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Davis has a contract for three more years, which means that the Mavericks will have two key players under long-term contracts in the coming period.

Ready for the new season

The agreement with Kyrie was reached just before the NBA draft, in which Dallas will very likely select young basketball player Cooper Flagg, a former Duke player, as the first pick. Interestingly, both Irving and young center Dereck Lively II are also former players at the same university.

When the nine-time all-star returns from injury, which is expected at the end of December or in January, the plan is for him, Lively and Flagg to be part of the starting five, of course, provided that everyone remains healthy and ready to play.

Kyrie arrived in Dallas in 2023 from Brooklyn, after a turbulent period with the Nets. Then the idea was to create a tandem with Luka Dončić, which bore fruit because the very next year together they led the Mavericks to the NBA finals for the first time in 13 years. Then they were defeated in the final by Boston, who celebrated after five games last June.

Fans are very familiar with the qualities of an experienced NBA player.
