Even though the season got off to a slow start, it has raised some concern among Kansas City Chiefs fans in the case of Travis Kelce but the coaching staff of the team is calm. The 34-year-old Kelce caught only four passes and received 39 yards in the first two games of the Chiefs’ season rather revealing for such a prominent tight end in the NFL.
For that reason, ‘none,’ I asked whether Matt Nagy, the Chiefs' offensive coordinator, looks at the numbers. Nagy remarked at the press conference on September 19, “He understands who he is”. Yes, so do we.
When you have that it’s very crucial that you retain your hat”. But in his recent comments, Nagy seems unperturbed by the statistic. He maintains that though it is not evident now, it is likely to come out soon.
“It’s just a matter of time,” he added.
Kelce Quiet Performance
The Chiefs made their season opener on September 15, in a week 3 match against the Cincinnati Bengals, and involving Kelce this time was quite performance-wise, with him catching just one pass.
This was the first instance in Kelsey’s regard since September 2018 that she has undergone three or more rebounds per game, even with pop star Taylor Swift leading from the stands. “I have been with him for a long period,” Nagy said about his and Kelce’s history.
“I have watched him practice; I have watched him play games. There has not been an iota of change. He has been tremendous”. Nagy and Kelce have been acquainted since Nagy was the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach between 2013 and 2015 and the offensive coordinator between 2016 and 2017.
After a spell with the Chicago Bears, Nagy re-joined the Chiefs in 2022 where he ascended to the offensive coordinator position in 2023, facilitating the team in securing back to back Super Bowl victories. ‘Travis has been fantastic,’ Nagy reinforced.
‘You see the targets, the statistics, all of that with Travis.’ As for Kelce, he does not seem to care how his stats look. “I was ‘stateless’ probably four or five years ago, and I haven’t been focused on numbers ever since,” Kelce said on Wednesday, September 18, during his “New Heights” podcast. “So I just went out and started playing for my guys and playing how I want”.
