Belal Muhammad believes he did enough to win his fight against Jack Delle Maddalena at UFC 315. It was his first time defending his welterweight title, but the judges ultimately scored it in the Australian’s favor.

Delle Maddalena landed the harder, more precise shots, and the judges scored him the winner 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47. However, Muhammad disagrees. After watching the fight multiple times, he’s convinced he should have come out on top.

– “The JDM fight was close. To me, I still think I won,” he told Home of Fight. – “I could watch it a million times and see myself winning every time. Every camp takes you to a higher level, and this fight is definitely going to take me to a higher level. At the end of the day, my goal is to be the best fighter of all time, the most complete fighter. The next time you see me in the cage, you’ll be surprised at how much I’ve improved.”

This view of the fight is interesting because most fans and analysts believe that Delle Maddalena deserved the win. However, Muhammad still believes that the result could have been different.

Muhammad is looking towards new challenges

Although he is aware that the judges were not on his side, he is already focused on the future and wants to get back into action as soon as possible. His biggest target is former champion Kamaru Usman, whom he accuses of avoiding a fight with him.

– “I think a fight with Kamaru Usman makes the most sense,” he told MMAJunkie. – “He has to get through me. I am still the number one contender. It was a warrior fight, declared the fight of the night. If JDM is still the champion, who wouldn’t want to see that rematch? But all these fighters have to count on me…”

– “He is trying to avoid that fight,” he added. – “He knows that I am still the toughest stylistic challenger in the division. No matter what, I am confident that I am still the best in the division.”

The 34-year-old is currently the number one contender in the welterweight division with a record of 24 wins, 4 losses and one no-contest. The loss to Della Maddalena ended his 11-fight winning streak.
