Although the most important player in the recent trade between Dallas and the Los Angeles Lakers was Luka Dončić, we should not forget Anthony Davis, one of the best players in the NBA of the last decade. He was a key figure in the Lakers for five seasons, along with LeBron James, with whom he won the title in 2020.
Although they have not had much success since then, apart from one conference finals, the Lakers decided to make changes. They replaced Davis with the six-year-younger Dončić, who suddenly strengthened the team this winter.
The trade that shook the NBA world surprised many, especially Luka and Davis. Apparently, only a few people were privy to the details of the deal, including Nico Harrison and Rob Pelinka.
However, this great player is not so convinced. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said: "Everyone says that no one knew, but I just don't believe it."
The trade took place on the night of February 1-2, right after the Lakers' victory over the New York Knicks. Davis missed the game, and soon after, the full details of the trade were revealed.
He immediately called LeBron James, his former teammate, to find out more.
"He was my teammate for six years, so the first thing that came to mind was to call him. I knew there would be a lot of politics in the conversation with the team leaders," Davis added.
Reactions
While he's not sure he'll ever know the whole truth, Davis stressed that the club has to make a decision that's best for the organization.
While both teams have kept everything under wraps, many are wondering how it was that Dončić was offered only to the Lakers. Dallas fans are in shock, and many are opposing the trade, protesting outside the arena. In addition, Davis' injury, which has still kept him off the court, has further complicated the situation.
It's been more than three weeks since the trade was made, and the situation is slowly calming down. However, there's no doubt that this exchange will go down as one of the most exciting in NBA history.
