The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a 40-22 defeat in Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles, which came as a surprise to many. After three straight years of dominance, the Chiefs failed to maintain their championship streak.
Reid takes responsibility for defeat
After the game, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid addressed reporters. “We’re going to learn from this,” Reid said, considering the severity of the loss that ended their championship streak. He also took responsibility for his team’s poor performance: “We didn’t play well in any phase of the game, we didn’t practice well enough.”
Reid stressed that the game had too many turnovers and penalties, which combined with poor play created huge problems for the team. “You just can’t afford that against a good team,” he added.
Although the Chiefs showed some resistance, the game was dominated by the Eagles, who played greatly on both ends of the field. The Chiefs' offensive line couldn't handle the pressure, allowing as many as six sacks and 11 hits on Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes was under a lot of stress throughout the game, finishing with an extremely low QBR rating.
"They played well, they have great players and a good scheme," Reid said of the Eagles' defense. "They were simply better. They trained better - it starts with me - and they played better."
Although this Super Bowl was a special opportunity for Kansas City to achieve a "three-peat", Reid admitted that the defeat hurts.
"All these defeats hurt," said the coach, emphasizing that the team and the coaching staff put in a lot of effort to reach the final. "When you come this far and don't play at the level you want, it hurts," Reid concluded, aware that this is just another step in the learning process.
However, defeats are an integral part of sport and an opportunity for everyone to learn something new and make changes.
